Senior Community Service Requirement
One of the chief goals of public education is to create knowledgeable, active and responsible citizens for our democratic nation. As part of its K-12 social studies curriculum, the Snohomish School District requires all seniors to complete the Citizenship Through Action Program, a community service requirement. The program exposes our students to some of the real needs within Snohomish city and county communities and impresses upon them their ability to make a difference in the life of those communities. The opportunity to put their learning into action, while at the same time learning from their community service activity itself, are two of the educational strengths of the program.
Program details will be shared during the senior social studies classes. Mr. Gionet reviewed the requirements during the senior parent meeting on October 15. Successful completion of this program requires at least eight hours of community service outside of class. The most valuable service experiences tend to be those that are of interest to the student or related to the student’s vocational goals.
The time needed to process and verify the community service paperwork necessitates that it be turned in at the beginning of May. To encourage students to meet this deadline, attendance at the senior picnic is limited to those students who have turned in their paperwork on or before May 14. We have streamlined the process this year in cooperation with United Way of Snohomish County.
Students not meeting the deadline may turn in their paperwork up until June 9 at noon. If the paperwork is not received by that time we will not have the opportunity to verify service and the student may not be able to participate in graduation ceremonies. Students who do not meet this deadline will be given a diploma through the Registrar’s Office upon completion of all requirements.
We want to see every senior participate in year-end activities. This can be a great experience for your senior if it is done in a thoughtful and timely manner.
