On April 14, 2005, Governor Christine Gregoire signed into law House Bill 1246 (HB 1246), better known as the Courtney Amisson Bill. Courtney was killed in November of 2002 as a result of a car accident that resulted in her being struck by a speaker box that was not secured in the car. HB 1246 was initiated and lobbied by seniors from Snohomish High School. As a direct result of their actions, it is now law in the State of Washington that all audio equipment be secured to the automobile. Seniors from the Class of 2005 that were directly responsible for the bill include Julia Baggenstos, Sarah Battien, Sarah Maier, Gina McKinney, Kyle Scott and Brandon Scriber. State Representatives Hans Dunshee (D-44th) and John Lovick (D-44th) were both supportive and instrumental in helping the students get their bill passed. Courtney's parents, Ron and Carol Amisson, her brother Nate, and good friend Missy Waldron, also accompanied the students for the bill signing.
