Commencement Requirements and Responsibilities

Even though classes officially end on June 5, school for graduates does not end until the graduation ceremonies are completed. This is a joyous but formal ceremony. It is not just for you, but for your family, friends and our community. It is to be treated as a significant occasion. You will be expected to behave appropriately.

Satisfactorily completing the minimum credit requirements, clearing all fines and obligations and participating in the commencement rehearsal are prerequisites for participation in the commencement exercises. Before the final day of classes, your teachers are to inspect and assess the damage to equipment, or supplies. Please make sure all property belonging to Snohomish School District is returned. Student laptop and charging cord MUST be returned before student will receive graduation tickets.

Graduation Participation

Seniors may participate in the graduation ceremony if they:

  • Have passed all the required courses and earned 24 semester credits.
  • Have passed the reading, writing and math sections of the HSPE or approved alternative.
  • Have completed the eight-hour community service requirement and turned in required documentation.
  • Have had credit reinstated in classes required for graduation if credit was lost due to excessive absences.
  • Are not under a suspension or expulsion at the time of the graduation ceremony.
  • Have paid all the fines and fees owed to Snohomish High School.

Graduation Dress Code

  • Appropriate shirt, slacks (no denim), skirts, dresses, and nice shoes (no flip-flops)

  • No messages or additions on mortarboards

  • No silly string, party poppers, air horns, beach balls or disruption of any kind that takes the focus from this significant ceremony.

  • No adornments other than those issued by SHS as part of the graduation attire will be allowed.

  • We understand that some students have an ethnic heritage they wish to honor through their graduation attire. If you intend to request such accommodation, please complete the form available on our website and in the main office. These requests must be submitted in writing by the end of April to the main office and receive approval.

Graduation Rehearsal

Rehearsal is required for participation in graduation. If you do not plan on participating in graduation, let your counselor know. Rehearsal will last about an hour.

Graduation Tickets

Each graduate will receive up to 20 tickets for their families. We may grant requests for additional tickets after check-out based on availability. Everyone attending graduation must have a ticket. The arena has designated handicapped seating on a first come, first serve basis. Please call Sherri Pickett at 360-563-4019 with any questions.

Caps and Gowns

The caps and gowns are yours to keep. The following is suggested for the care of caps and gowns:

  • Place the gown on a hanger and allow it to hang until graduation night. This permits wrinkles to straighten out. Please do not try to iron this synthetic fabric.
  • Place name on the inside of the cap.

Diplomas

Diplomas will be handed out to seniors, with the possible exception of Running Start students, at the graduation ceremony. Running Start diplomas will be released after grades are received from the community college. Diplomas unclaimed after graduation may be picked up in the registrar’s office until June 26. Diplomas will not be mailed home.

Transcripts

Senior grades will be posted as soon as possible and sent to the appropriate post-secondary institution upon request by the student. In order for the institution to receive transcripts in time for registration, your request needs to be made no later than June 18. All senior transcript requests should be made through the Senior Checkout Survey form.

Rules

All school rules regarding alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and behavior are still in effect through the end of the commencement ceremony. Please remember vandalism, drugs and alcohol, vaping, tobacco use or possession, property damage, etc. could affect your participation in the commencement ceremony.
